Caitlin Coreris makes large-scale oil paintings in which architecture and music operate not as metaphor but as structural principle. Her paintings are architectural abstractions built through the logic of music and spatial rhythm. The surfaces hold geometric and biomorphic forces in permanent tension, simultaneously declared and atmospheric, structured and alive. Coreris was raised inside a hand-built rhombic triacontahedron designed by her architect father and filled with the sound of her cellist mother. Light entered through form. Music organized space. This was not metaphor, it was the condition of her earliest experience and remains the condition of her paintings.
Trained at the Rhode Island School of Design, she returned to the San Francisco Bay Area where her work entered the collection of the SFMOMA Artists Gallery. Her influences run from the chromatic expansions of Matisse and Diebenkorn to the biomorphic inventions of Miró — painters for whom color and form are structural.
Coreris begins each painting by building chromatic grounds through accumulated layers of color that establish mood and space before drawing. Structure emerges from sensation. Figural elements subtly press through the geometry and reframe what surrounds them. The paintings balance areas that are active, compressed, and open; there are moments of stillness within movement, structure and flow, sound and silence. Instead of static images, Coreris’ paintings are ongoing perceptual events.
